United Nations Training Seminar on the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocity Crimes

training in entebbeOn the 5-6 of September 2013, representatives from the Uganda Police, the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, and the Uganda Peoples Defense Force, joined the Uganda National Committee on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (UNCP-GMA) to attend a training seminar facilitated by the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Prevention of Genocide (OSAPG). The two day training consisted of presentations from the United Nations, academia, and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR). The objectives of the seminar were to explore methods to strengthen the National Committee and analyze how to protect and enable civil society to provide support to national institutions by incorporating preventative approaches to their work. The seminars focused on early warning, the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), and national, regional, and international legal frameworks in accordance with the ICGLR Protocol on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and All Forms of Discrimination.
